Beacon is an app designed to help voters stay informed in a digestible, practical way through custom voting guides, a curated newsfeed, and accessible civic actions. With a focus on each citizen’s agency, Beacon is a tool for helping voters engage in the small collective actions that can move the needle without the disillusionment that comes with today’s sensationalized, 24/7 news cycle.
Inspired by the bygone days of unfolding your trusted morning newspaper, Beacon employs a limited color palette of neutrals with the sparing activation of a yellow highlight to keep users focused on the task at hand. A condensed typeface for headers, classic serif for body copy, and a monospaced type for labels keep things organized and pays homage to the trusted journalism of classic print publications.
This app was born from an intensive cycle of user research. Interviews, affinity mapping, and personas, made clear the need potential users felt for new tools to engage with politics today.
The goals of Beacon were realized through a straight-forward and functional interface. Highly condensed, bold headlines and an italicized serif typeface build trust and credibility. A simple color palette prioritizes utility and an uncluttered dashboard helps allow for information to be digested.
